Give Notice When Leaving a Lease Early

Before leaving early, give the landlord a clear notice. Notice does not necessarily mean that termination has been accepted, nor does it settle the deposit or remaining rent.

Check the notice requirements

Read the early-termination clause, required period and delivery method, alongside applicable rules. Where agreement is needed, present your proposed date as a request. A number of days written in a lease does not create an unconditional exit in every circumstance.

State the essentials

Identify the tenant, property, lease dates, requested end date and contact details. Give a brief reason if useful without supplying unrelated personal information. For example: “My work arrangements have changed. I request an end date of [date]. Please confirm acceptance and the handover and settlement arrangements.” If exercising a particular contractual or legal right, identify the basis.

Confirm receipt

Use the agreed channel and keep evidence that the notice arrived. Record any accepted date, conditions or charges in writing. Until matters are agreed, continue dealing with the obligations that remain valid. Moving out or returning keys alone may not resolve them. Discuss the financial settlement as the next separate step.

After agreeing the exit date, read Agree an Early Lease Exit Settlement.
