Verify a Rental Payment Account

A rental payment account should correspond to the landlord or a properly authorised recipient. Check that connection before transferring a reservation payment, deposit or rent.

Match the name and purpose

Compare the agreement, any collection authority and the recipient name displayed by the bank. Record the property and period the payment covers. A different account-holder name is not automatically a problem, but it needs a reasonable explanation and appropriate authority. A verbal statement that this is normal practice is insufficient by itself.

Recheck changed instructions

If you receive a sudden account change, confirm it through a contact route already verified rather than only replying to the message carrying the new details. Pause when the displayed name does not match expectations. An agent’s ability to arrange a viewing does not automatically authorise collection of money.

Keep a usable receipt trail

Retain the transfer confirmation and ask the recipient to acknowledge the amount, purpose and property. Separate amounts where one transfer covers several charges. A small test payment may check whether an account receives money, but does not prove letting or collection authority. Resolve material inconsistencies before paying to hold the home.

If payment is to an agent, review Authorise an Agent to Receive a Property Payment.
