Check Your Rental Water Bill

A rental water bill may come directly from a supplier or through the building or landlord. Establish the water source and billing method before comparing readings and charges.

Identify the method

Ask whether the home has a supplier meter, a building submeter or another agreed charging arrangement. For a meter, compare its reference, billing dates and readings. Without an individual meter, request the basis for any allocation or fixed charge.

Separate the items

Check recorded consumption, the rate and other listed charges. Covered residential rental businesses must follow the relevant restrictions on water charges; applicability depends on the rental business and property circumstances. For a partial month, confirm that the bill does not include another occupant’s period.

Query the difference

Keep the bill and a meter photograph and identify the discrepancy. If the readings are correct but usage rose sharply, consider a running tap, leaking toilet or another fault and notify the landlord. You could write: “Usage increased although occupancy is unchanged. Please check the bill and arrange a leak inspection if needed.” Establish whether the next step is a billing correction or a repair rather than assuming either one.
