Record keys, access devices and meters at handover

Keys, access devices and meter records determine whether you can enter the home and check early bills. Use a short handover list while the representative is present.

Match keys to their locks

Record the purpose and quantity of entrance, mailbox, storage and other supplied keys, then try them normally. For a digital lock, request a demonstration, reset instructions and confirmation of control access. Set personal codes privately rather than writing them on a widely shared checklist. Record who will supply any missing keys and the next update.

Check access devices

Count cards, remotes and parking devices. Confirm activation and the entrances they operate. If resident or vehicle registration is needed, ask management which information is required. Obtain the contact for deactivation and replacement so you know what to do if a device is lost.

Record meter numbers and readings together

Have the representative identify the water and electricity meters serving your home. Note the meter numbers, date and visible readings, with photographs where useful. Confirm that they are yours rather than a neighbour's. Ask who issues the bills and who assists with any account change or activation.

Keep a shared handover record

Mark each item received, missing or awaiting activation, obtain appropriate confirmation and retain a copy. Physical handover, defect rectification and title transfer are separate matters. Receiving keys should not turn unrelated outstanding work into a completed item. The outcome is a clear record of what works, what remains and whom to contact.
