The character of the area
Historically farmland — reputedly the first place in Thailand to grow longan — Hang Dong today mixes traditional villages with modern moobaan (housing estates). Ban Tawai in Khun Khong has been a handicraft and wood-carving centre since the 1960s, and Wat Ton Kwen (c.1858) is one of the region's finest Lanna temples.
Daily life and amenities
The district is well served: international schools, big-box retail and hypermarkets along the Hang Dong and canal roads, the Royal Park Rajapruek gardens, the Night Safari and the "Grand Canyon" swimming spot. Chiang Mai International Airport is about 15 minutes north and the Old City roughly 8 km away, so everyday shopping runs from fresh markets to mall-anchored retail a short drive toward town.
